ORChidea Products Platform is the first catalog in the world dedicated to a complete range of ORC systems. In addition to the technical data of the machines, it describes the main applications and plant solutions.
The advent of the 4th and 5th generation of district heating networks and the flexibility of the ORChidea platform allow significantly improve the efficiency of the networks thanks to new plant solutions. The low discharge temperature of the networks allows to send the heat directly from the condenser of the ORChidea systems, which can be fed at the evaporator with biomass or solar thermal, making the networks work with renewable energy only.
In November, the model platform that can be connected to the single-phase 230 V (50 or 60 Hz) power grid is being released. From December the kaymacor ORC modules will be able to be connected to single-phase 230V networks. This possibility is limited to ORChidea 3LT, ORChidea 6LT e ORChidea 5MT models since the legislation provides for connection to the single-phase network only up to an electrical power of 6 kW. The platform is open to the development of single-phase applications at voltages other than 230V.
Kaymacor collaborates with the Greek company OLOKLIROMENO KENTRO ANAKIKLOSIS SA and the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences based in Patras as part of a research on a new technology on the recovery of hazardous waste, to remove total organic carbon (TOC) by converting it in gas. In this project Kaymacor supplies ORChidea 5MT unit capable of transforming the useful heat present in the gas flow into energy. For this application, kaymacor has also designed the economizer that recovers heat from the fumes of the innovative process. The solution identified is a double spiral coil solution. Kaymacor calculated and designed the compo. Then he sent the construction drawings to the final customer to build the economizer directly on the plant.
Kaymacor and solar cooling applications The Kaymacor low temperature models (KC-LT) can be used for solar cooling applications. Fed with water in the temperature range of 60 - 110 °, they provide the electrical power needed to power traditional steam compression cooling cycles. The company has built three plants by integrating its technology with concentrating solar collectors. In this context, a low temperature model will be delivered in December to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics NRIAG in Cairo in Egypt. The possibility of powering the ORC from both a solar source and a biomass boiler makes the ORC a unique technology able to use two renewable energy sources in parallel (sun and biomass) and to be able to store energy not only in batteries but also in thermal form. ORC machines can also be used in conjunction with absorption machines. In this case, the overall efficiency of the solar cooling system increases further.
The possibility of using the ORChidea platform in combination with solar thermal and biomass with thermal and biomass storage makes it particularly suitable for energy communities or for multi-energy systems (Multi-Energy Systems, also called DES District-Energy Systems). These systems integrate energies renewables, various energy networks (gas, electricity, district heating and remote cooling), cogeneration and energy storage. These systems represent one of the most promising solutions for reducing CO2 emissions. Kaymacor ORC for solar & cooling integrated with solar thermal collectors produces electricity and heat. Our partner in Ireland presents the Biogenic Processor. Kaymacor ORC machine is integrated inside it and provides electricity and heat for treating the wasted material.
Contribution Abstract: Organic Rankine Cycle is one of the most efficient, profitable and feasible technology for low-to-medium temperature heat recovery. The boost to the development of small-scale systems that could easily enter the market poses challenges in layout design and selection of components. This work deals with a micro-scale ORC unit conceived to be cheap, efficient and compact. The transient response of the system has been experimentally investigated and simulated with large variations of the heat source. To this end, a dynamic model is built and validated against a large set of experimental data. The final goal is to show the real potential of the system in terms of market applications, for which best design choices, operational limits and response time to variable heat sources must be identified. Results proved the fast time response of the system that promptly reacts to variations of the heat source temperature. The model is able to capture well the system dynamics, showing maximum relative errors of about 5% in the prediction of both output power and high pressure. The choice of scroll expander, volumetric pump and plate heat exchangers is made according to the lowest cost-to-efficiency ratio to keep the investment cost below 2500 euro/kW already at the pre-market phase. The additional heat production (around 15 liters/min at 40°C) amplifies the market potential in isolated domestic applications and paves the way for further cost reductions.

From now on all ORChidea Models are monitored in real time in the field. The on-board software can be updated remotely. In this way the functionalities of each plant are continuously enhanced and optimized.

This book provides a systematic and detailed description of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technologies and the way they are increasingly of interest for cost-effective sustainable energy generation with applications in cogeneration from biomass and from geothermal reservoirs, amongst others. Kaymacor contribution is in the chapter 18th dedicated to Micro-Organic Rankine Cycle systems for domestic cogeneration.

In collaboration with University of Florence and others partners a PTC solar field and coupled with an ORC machine is installed at Misericordia Hospital in Florence. This installation is one of the pilot plants reliazed for PIACE project that is coordinated by one of Kaymacor partner.
One of the ORC application is the production of electrical energy starting from solar heat at medium temperature. One limit of such application is solar field costs. That's why Kaymacor acquired three licences for the realisation of a smart solar collector whose cost is very competitive. In a ORC Cycle the pump is a key component due to the difficulties to pump the organic fluid. Moreover ORC pump power consumption can not be negletted as in traditional steam cycles. That's why Kaymacor has developed its own technology.
Integration of the Cycle pump inside the Receiver vessel is an high competitive item for Kaymacor. In this way circuit is simplified, sealing is ensured and all pump motor heat is recovered.
The smallest one of Kaymacor machines, 2 kW, is used to recover heat from the gas exhaust of an internal combustion engine. Any thermal source whose temperature is higher than 140°C represents a precious enrgy source which can be transformed in electricity and heat at lower temperature.
